Conference Updates
2025 INFORMS Revenue Management and Pricing Section Conference
The 2025 INFORMS Revenue Management and Pricing (RMP) Conference was hosted by Columbia Business School this year. It was a great success featured with many engaging talks, outstanding speakers, and exceptional organization and hospitality. This event provided an inspiring platform for exchanging ideas, sharing feedback, and exploring new directions in the field.
This year’s conference followed its tradition of showcasing diverse methodologies and applications while also responding to the growing interest in AI and data-driven decision-making. For instance, there was a series of talks focusing on assortment optimization, pricing analytics, and inventory decisions. Ningyuan Chen (UToronto) presented an innovative end-to-end framework for data-driven assortment optimization by directly mapping data to assortment decisions, which bypasses the challenges of rank-based predict-then-optimize models (joint with Andre Cire, Pin Gao, and Shaoyu Wang). Omar Mouchtaki (NYU) introduced a framework to rigorously quantify the value of historical price–demand data and use it to design efficient pricing experiments (joint with Achraf Bahamou and Omar Besbes). Chamsi Hssaine (USC) highlighted their work on an offline data-driven newsvendor problem under censored demand, addressing an important but underexplored challenge for both academia and practice (joint with Sean Sinclair). Amine Bennouna (Northwestern) examined data informativeness in linear optimization by introducing a data selection algorithm that identifies the smallest, most informative dataset required to recover the optimal solution (joint with Omar Bennouna, Saurabh Amin, and Asuman Ozdaglar).
Alongside these interesting works, the program also included cutting-edge research on machine learning and AI. Jingyuan Yang (UChicago) and Ruihao Zhu (Cornell) demonstrated how large language models can help solve dynamic programming and large-scale optimization problems, which points to exciting new intersections between OR and AI. Talks on behavioral and social dimensions of data-driven decision-making were also very fascinating. Ruth Beer (CUNY) experimentally examined how individuals choose between algorithmic versus personal decision-making, finding that people systematically overpay to retain control (joint with Daniela Saban). Jackie Baek (NYU) studied how firms’ data-driven learning can create feedback loops that exacerbate group disparities over time (joint with Ali Makhdoumi). The conference was also highlighted by a set of inspiring keynote speeches. David Simchi-Levi (MIT) shared how his team has developed data analytics tools to support both online and brick-and-mortar retailers. Zizhuo Wang (CUHK-Shenzhen) described his collaborative work with industry partners, including large-scale solutions for complex systems such as railway operations. Gabriel Weintraub (Stanford) discussed his research on online platforms and marketplaces with resource limitations. These talks left many interesting directions to explore.
Congratulations to Will Ma and Santiago Balseiro for organizing such an amazing conference, and thank you for all the hard work you put into it! It was an energizing experience in NYC this summer. I look forward to next year’s RMP conference in Ann Arbor, Michigan (go blue)!
