There are countless things that can distract you in an office. Unless you have discipline and know exactly how to block these distractions, you’re going to have a hard time staying focused on your work. Apart from getting emails and texts, you’re likely to often hear other people’s phones ringing, as well as your colleagues talking about work and their personal lives. In case you’re finding it hard to focus at the office, you should do something about it right away. Split Work into Micro-Tasks Working on big projects is often quite overwhelming. You may get discouraged when you see months of effort go into something and not be done with it. If you don’t ...

Training employees is a big part of running a successful business. Large enterprises invest billions of dollars a year developing their talent because they know how important it is for the long term success of their organizations.  The research is clear. A huge part of  retaining good employees is developing them . There's a popular saying these days that goes something like this. What if we train our employees and they leave? Well, what if we don't train them and they stay?  Unlike large enterprise companies, small businesses often can't afford the time or money to invest in large scale training operations like big businesses. So how can a small business ...

Data Governance

When I hear of a nonprofit interested in a "data analytics" project, my mind jumps to the usual technical stuff: torturing data; making pretty pictures out of the confessions; maybe something a bit over-engineered (a regression tree where the leaves are Bayesian deep learning neural networks?). A couple of Pro Bono Analytics consultations, though, have focused on what you might think of as precursor topics: what data does/should the organization have; where is it/should it be parked; who gets access to it. A recent article in Analytics Magazine , " The rise of self-service analytics ", raises related questions in the context of corporate analytics. (A slightly ...

The Certified Analytics Professional Code of Ethics (See CAP Ethics ) is very important to me personally and professionally in my role as a Chief Analytics Officer and in my conduct with clients in the healthcare domain. I work closely with medical professionals in defining and implementing methods for guiding intervention at the point-of-care per the practice of medicine. It occurred to me that while there are many analytics professionals who ply their practice to healthcare, it might be useful to share a particular application relative to the real-time intervention and guidance of interventions relative to patient care. An area of increasing importance and ...

The Growing Problem of Humanizing Robots Introduction One thing that seems to unite many scholars that study robots is the goal of one day creating a fully autonomous human-like robot capable of mimicking all human behaviors and emotions. Advances in artificial intelligence and robotics are beginning to make what was once a thing of science fiction seem not only possible, but probable. To be fair, research has already demonstrated that humans do not need much in the way of prompting to treat and interact with technology as if it was human [1]. Yet, the current trend toward designing robots to be personal assistants, companions and even lovers may have ...

The 2017 INFORMS Annual Meeting in Houston was awesome. Sports played a major role in making the meeting a success. Let me explain. The big event was held at Minute Maid Field. This is the home of the Houston Astros. The Astros did very well and were in the World Series (championship series for American baseball). Over the past few years, Major League Baseball had a rule that the winning league of the All-Star Game played in July would have home-field advantage. In 2017 the American League (Astros are in the American League) won the All-Star Game. Major League Baseball changed the rule for 2017 and returned to the old rule that awarded home field advantage to ...
