    Good evening,

The Bipartisan House AI Task Force has unveiled its much-anticipated report on AI adoption, governance, and innovation, marking a pivotal step in shaping the United States' AI future. The report outlines a framework that reflects many of the things we have been discussing with Members of Congress over the past few years to encourage AI's transformative potential while addressing societal, ethical, and national security challenges. You can download a copy of the report here: https://www.speaker.gov/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/AI-Task-Force-Report-FINAL.pdf

    Key Themes of the Report:

Advancing Research and Standards: The report underscores the importance of continued federal investment in foundational AI research and infrastructure. Robust evaluation frameworks, clear standards, and public-private partnerships are seen as critical to maintaining U.S. leadership and ensuring AI systems are transparent, reliable, and effective.

Strengthening Data Privacy and Governance: As AI systems rely on vast quantities of data, the report highlights the need for privacy-enhancing mechanisms and responsible governance. Policies aim to balance the innovative use of data with safeguards that protect individual privacy and prevent misuse.

Bridging the Workforce Gap: Addressing the growing demand for AI talent is a central priority. The report calls for bolstering STEM education, fostering AI literacy at all levels, and promoting partnerships that build a diverse, skilled workforce capable of driving AI innovation and adoption.

Enhancing Government Use of AI: AI offers transformative opportunities for federal agencies to improve efficiency, service delivery, and decision-making. The report stresses the importance of accountability, transparency, and safeguards to ensure responsible adoption and minimize risks, such as bias or unintended consequences.

Navigating Ethical and Security Risks: AI's dual role as a tool for progress and potential misuse receives significant focus. The report highlights the need for ethical frameworks, risk-based governance, and international collaboration to address threats, such as adversarial use of AI, misinformation, and autonomous systems.

AI and Critical Infrastructure: Recognizing AI's impact on energy usage, grid modernization, and data centers, the report identifies infrastructure investment as a priority to support AI innovation while ensuring sustainability and resilience.

As we prepare to work with a new Congress and the next Administration, INFORMS remains committed to advocating for how our members’ expertise and fields of  interest can contribute to Washington's efforts in addressing these and other critical issues.
