    Call for Nominations: INFORMS Data Mining Society Teaching Award

     

    The INFORMS Data Mining Society is excited to announce the inaugural INFORMS Data Mining (DM) Society Teaching Award, which honors faculty members who demonstrate excellence in teaching data mining and data science. This award aims to recognize outstanding educators who have made significant contributions to the teaching of these fields, showcasing innovative teaching methods and a commitment to student success.

    Purpose

    The INFORMS DM Teaching Award seeks to recognize faculty members who have advanced the field of data science education by developing and implementing creative and effective teaching strategies. The award highlights those who go above and beyond in shaping the next generation of data science professionals.

    Key Dates & Information

    • Call for Nomination Opens: May 5, 2025

    • Application Deadline: June 30, 2025

    • Winner Announcement: At the INFORMS Annual Meeting

    Winners will be announced at the Data Mining Society Business Meeting at the 2025 INFORMS Annual Meeting. The following cash prizes will be awarded:

    • First Place: $500

    • Second Place: $300

    • Two Third-Place (Honorable Mention) Awards: $100 each

    Eligibility Criteria

    • The nominee must be an active INFORMS Data Mining Society member and affiliated with a university or academic institution at the time of submitting this application.

    • The nominee must have at least 2 years of teaching experiences in data mining and data science.

    • The nominee must have taught a course related to data mining and data science within 3 years.

    • The nominee must be available to attend the 2025 INFORMS Annual Meeting if selected as a winner.

    Nomination Package

    The nomination package should include the following components:

    1. Two Letters of Support: one letter from a faculty member (from the nominee's current or previous institution, such as a department chair), and one letter from a student who has taken the nominated course. Each letter should not exceed 2 pages and must provide a clear evaluation of the nominee's teaching effectiveness, innovation, and impact on students.

    1. Course Syllabus and Samples of Course Materials (up to 20 pages), showcasing how the course aligns with data science education and the methods used to engage students.

    2. Teaching Evaluations: at least two, and up to four, recent teaching evaluations for the nominated course, including unabridged student comments. (Evaluations should be from the past three years).

    3. Teaching-Focused CV (up to 2 pages), highlighting the nominee's teaching experience, awards, and other related achievements.

    4. Reflective Statement by the Nominee (1 page), describing the nominee's teaching philosophy, their approach to data science education, and the impact they have had on their students.
