We are excited to be welcoming new members to INFORMS all the time! Over two years ago, we started the original Welcome New Members thread. It now has so many replies that we hear the page is not loading properly and people can no longer post there. So, we're starting a new one here!

This space is for you, new members. We invite you to say hello to your INFORMS network. Please tell us a little about yourself and what brought you to INFORMS.

    • Your name and a quick description of the work you do
    • What do you hope to gain as an INFORMS member?
    • A fun fact about you

Welcome new members - you will find INFORMS a great forum for learning.  I have been doing analytics for 50 years - I belong to the "before" times.  You represent the future.  If you are not familiar with the Edelman Competition - it is worth learning more about this.

Welcome new members! I joined INFORMS earlier this year. I've been a volunteer leader in other organizations for over 20 years since I started my professional career as an engineer practicing analytics and it's been a rewarding experience. I looked for an organization relevant to analytics and INFORMS stood out to me. I'm looking forward to studying for the CAP next month and leveraging the certification to mentor professionals earlier in their career than I am. I encourage new members (experienced and inexperienced) to leverage networking opportunities and seek certification if your practice/career could benefit from it. Looking forward to meeting many of you face-to-face in the future!

Welcome, Aaron! INFORMS is a good choice for an analytics professional, as you'll meet the finest experts around.  If you get a chance to go to a national or regional meeting, it will be well worth it. You don't have to present a paper to benefit.

Welcome to INFORMS! I also transitioned into data analytics. Started in epidemiology and moved over to BI. If you get an opportunity, take a Business Writing for Technical Personnel course. This course helped me and will help you in future to write white papers and email to your audience. I learned the hard way that writing detailed technical and methodology-focused white papers did not sit well with C-suite executives.

    Hello all!

My name is Morgan McQuade.  I recently transitioned from data visualization analyst to financial analyst at a family owned, wholesale produce distributor headquartered in the Pacific Northwest. There are exciting developments in the traditionally conservative world of accounting, and I want to explore them to see what I can leverage for my organization. When I signed up for my membership, it was hard to choose from the societies/sections, but since I could only join one, I had to go with Revenue Management & Pricing. My journal selections were Strategy Science & Journal on Applied Analytics. Obviously, the Transportation Science & Logistic Society would also be good choice given my industry, but there is only so much time in the day! However, the relationship between financial performance and supply chain management is a powerful one I would like to explore.

Last year, I earned my MS in Applied Business Analytics from American Public University, and as I am close to completing my three years of work experience, I want to take the CAP certification to demonstrate my expertise (and for fun). There is a lot of hype out there that obscures the hard work it takes for practical applications to be successful.  To me, INFORMS represents an authentic commitment to delivering value to business and society through STEM disciplines. As a lifelong learner, I hope to keep my thinking fresh and inspired by all the great minds here.
    Best regards,

My name is Jacob Gratrix. I finished my bachelor's in mathematics at UConn last December and now work as a Business Analyst at Charter Communications based in Stamford, Connecticut. I work on an analytics team focused on outage management.

I first encountered OR in one of my university courses (oddly enough in the economics dep't, not math) and fell in love with the discipline. I joined INFORMS last September to get access and start reading papers in INFORMS journals. I hope to meet fellow OR practitioners and maybe cross-pollinate ideas from folks in other industries into my work in telecom. I'm also looking into pursuing aCAP certification in the near future.

    Hi,

My name is Alan Pace. Last year I joined Deloitte as a business consultant in the data space.  Previous to this, I have had several roles in the supply chain space, especially transportation and warehousing.

I would like to learn more about operations research and the scope of problems that can be solved, so that I can help businesses and organisations to work more efficiently and profitably.

I first heard about INFORMS through reading a textbook on Practical Management Science. The book quite often referenced Interface articles in the introduction to each chapter.

I have an interest in Sudoku puzzles and built a linear transportation model to solve them. Although it was a good application of a linear model, it is still more enjoyable solving them myself!

Hello, I'm Dmytro, originally from Ukraine.

As a former CIO of a local medium-sized manufacturing company, I have a sustained interest in mathematical methods of manufacturing planning and scheduling. In recent years, I worked as a software engineer developing manufacturing planning applications for international airplane and space satellite manufacturers.

While I have no academic degree in OR/MS, I acquired quite a lot of knowledge in this field in a non-formal way, by reading academic literature. I've also completed several long-term online courses and programs related to the field, incl. two 2-year MIT Micro-Master programs and "Discrete Optimization" Coursera course by prof. Van Hentenryck. Currently, I'm an International Business Administration student at Tallinn University of Technology, Estonia.

As an INFORMS member, I hope for meaningful discussions with professionals from industry and academia. Hope such a communication will have value not only for me but for other participants too. Also, I'm going to take the CAP exam in the near future, as the sample test shows I'm quite well-prepared for it already.

    Hello all,

I am Damsara Jayarathne, a Ph.D. student at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, USA.

My current research focuses on combining model-based control designs and data-driven methods, such as reinforcement learning. Additionally, I am interested in interactive optimization frameworks where a human decision-maker and an optimization method are combined to extend the capabilities of sole optimization-based methods. This applies to a variety of problems including supply chain design.

My background is in mechanical engineering; therefore, I hope to learn more about the latest trends and developments in OR. Also, I look forward to meeting new people.

    Hi Damsara,

Welcome to INFORMS! I also am a mechanical engineer, registered PE in the state of NC. I've been practicing industrial asset health analytics for over 20 years and find this community helpful for thinking outside the box.

The research focus areas you mentioned also apply nicely to power plant control systems. Most power plant controls still are using PID's and some have limited applications of model-based controls, but are slow to implement because (I think) of lack of understanding. We need more training and field application time to realize the ROI possible.

    Good luck with your studies!

    Hello, everyone

My name is Hugo Santarem de Araujo, and I'm a Ph.D. student at the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Cornell University. Maybe not the most common department among INFORMS members, but I'm feeling closer to the community one OR class at a time.

Broadly, my research lies within the realm of Electricity Markets. More specifically, I'm interested in understanding the role of long-term energy storage in grid operation. Lately, hybrid systems management has come on my radar and piqued my interested. Overall, I'm also trying to understand how these new technologies affect price formation.

I joined INFORMS to expand my network and learn about the latest innovations in the field - both from theoretical and applied perspectives.

    Best,

    Hugo

    Hi everyone!

I'm excited to be joining the INFORM community and look forward to networking and knowledge exchange opportunities, with those who have mutual interests and passion for data and analytics.

Currently, I am the Manager of Planning, Outcomes and Analytics for a government Service Manager in Northern Ontario, Canada. I oversee our coproporate business intelligence (BI) system and conduct statistical analysis of program data across our service areas of early learning and childcare; social assistance and employment; housing and homelessness; and emergency medical services (EMS-land ambulance).

A fun fact about me, in my previous career I worked in the field of sub-sea technology and was a submarine technician and pilot. So, from submarines to statistics and analytics, just about any career path or change is possible!

    Hi Hugo,

We share what might be a perceived uncommon path to INFORMS - engineering. I'm a mechanical engineer by educational background and have practiced analytics for identifying electric power generation equipment faults for over 20 years. You might be interested in www.epri.com, a research institute that does all things electric industry, worldwide. I worked for them for ~10 years and it's a great institute to find deep technical reports on subjects such as the ones you're interested in. We should get involved in INFORMS to bring more electricity focused discussions into the fold. It's a huge field and the need for peer sharing is immense!

    Hi Christopher!

I recently joined INFORMS (2023) and then studied for and passed the CAP exam. It was a very valuable learning experience and relevant to my day job - engineered analytics in the electric power industry. I used to spend about 1 week/month for ~3 years in Toronto for work - beautiful city! During that time I was helping Ontario Power Generation build their analytics program for monitoring power plant equipment. British Columbia is not too shabby either - been to Vancouver just once to train Honeywell (Oil & Gas) on how to build predictive analytics models.

    Welcome!

Hello, I'm Dave Buena. I'm currently a contracts analyst.

I am hoping to expand my knowledge and experience in Operations Research, AI and the math behind them. May I know some free courses/resources I could have?

I graduated in 2021 with a bachelor's degree in business administration, major in operations management but with the high competition in the job market and the financial pressure, I had to take any jobs. I am hoping that by joining INFORMS, I could have better chances to shifting to Data Science or if possible, AI roles. Also, I am looking forward to collaborating with fellow members in researching about the possibilities of combining OR and Quantum Computing algorithms and techniques that might lead to breakthroughs. Also, with other topics in Math, Physics and Engineering.

I'm also looking forward to connecting and hopefully build some healthy friendships in the community.

Fun fact? I am taking an online engineering degree (I consider it fun because the difficulty is beyond for me with no solid math or physics background T_T)

    Hi everybody!

My name is Igor Kuvychko, I work as a senior software developer for INFICON Intelligent Manufacturing Systems division. My work is focused on optimization of semiconductor manufacturing, and a lot of my time is dedicated to scheduling in this context (flexible job shop with highly re-entrant flow). Prior to INFICON I spent a decade working for Intel in different roles related to process development and manufacturing.

I took part in the 2023 Winter Simulation Conference and I absolutely loved the community and the talks, so it was a simple decision to join INFORMS society. I look forward to attending (and hopefully presenting) at future conferences, learning from (and contributing to) this wonderful community, and networking with the members!

Fun fact about me: my background is actually in chemistry, not in OR or Industrial Engineering. I have a PhD in chemistry, but I was always interested in applied math. As time went by I found myself picking and starting more data and mathematics-oriented projects, which led me to my current position.

    Thanks!

    My Research:

    1. Experimental study of reinforcement learning in the Santa Fe Double Auction: where I study how information disclosures influence market efficiency and collusion under multi-agent learning.
    2. Choice/demand models that incorporate unstructured data: Here I seek to incorporate deep neural networks into multinomial choice models where we are able to do inference on and recover the price sensitivities while handling text, images, sequences, etc.

Fun Fact: I start a pickup soccer group where ever I go.

Hi, Ripal, glad to see you have joined INFORMS.  Your areas of interest are also good topics for many other members.

I'm interested in what you do with Java.  That language is not used so much anymore. There were some big security loopholes that were very hard to fix, and most in the US have abandoned it.  I did work at a company years ago that was all Java programming for websites.  I think I've forgotten most of my Java skills now!

Hi Jakob, you have some interesting research areas.  I've done a bit of reviewing in urban logistics papers, but I can't claim it as a research area.  Recently I've been working in maritime logistics, especially ESG related topics.  Is EM Normandie related to Normandy, France?
I live in Tucson Arizona USA, so you're not likely to meet me in Paris! But I hope you find some members there.

    Hi Bruce,

Thanks for your message! Yes, indeed, EM Normandie is a Business school initially created in Le Havre in 1871 as Ecole Superieure de Commerce Le Havre. Our biggest campus is in Paris/Clichy however, we have two large campuses in Le Havre and Caen (both in Normandy).
For more on our school's history, you can have a look here: https://en.em-normandie.com/internationally-recognised-business-school/150-years-history-and-innovation

Small aside, my late great-uncle lived in Phoenix, Arizona.

    Best regards,
    Jakob

I'm glad you've joined, Rhoda.  You will find a welcoming community of data scientists in INFORMS.  It's by far the most professional of the groups you could join.  Are you specializing in a particular area of analytics yet?  You will be able to find others who are interested.

Introduction My name is Hsin-Wei Hsu, and I serve as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Industrial Engineering and Management at National Taipei University of Technology in Taiwan. My research primarily focuses on soft computing, evolutionary computation, optimization theory, and their applications across various fields such as energy policy decision-making, the food industry, logistics (particularly related to food or green issues), decision making, and addressing uncertainties.

Aspirations as an INFORMS Member As a member of INFORMS, I am looking forward to connecting with a global network of professionals and researchers that will enrich my knowledge and allow me to contribute significantly to the fields of operations research and management sciences. I am particularly eager to engage in interdisciplinary collaborations that merge theoretical approaches with practical applications, especially in projects related to net-zero sustainable planning.

A Fun Fact I have been a long-time attendee and follower of INFORMS conferences. It's only recently, with a little more money in my pocket, that I thought it might be time to officially join. I guess you could say I finally optimized my budget for maximum membership benefits!
