The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has released a new Request for Information (RFI), titled "Request for Information on Responsibly Developing and Sharing Generative Artificial Intelligence Tools Using NIH Controlled Access Data" (Notice Number: NOT-OD-25-118).
This RFI invites feedback from researchers, AI developers, data scientists, privacy experts, and other members of the community on how to responsibly develop and share generative AI tools trained on human genomic data from NIH-controlled access repositories. As these tools grow more powerful, so do concerns about the possibility of sensitive data being inadvertently memorized or leaked. NIH is especially interested in ideas for minimizing those risks while still allowing innovation in biomedical research to flourish.
The agency is looking for input on what kinds of risks these tools may pose, what privacy-preserving techniques might be effective across the AI lifecycle, and how to strike the right balance between data protection and the responsible use and sharing of AI models. The goal is to inform NIH guidance that aligns with the Genomic Data Sharing Policy and Data Use Certification agreements, and to ensure these policies keep pace with evolving technologies.
