INFORMS Open Forum

INFORMS members are staying relevant in the news, garnering some bit media hits as of late. Rob Handfield of NC State was featured on Federal News Network late last week. Meanwhile, Christopher Tang at UCLA had an opinion editorial published in the South China Morning Post. Likewise, INFORMS President Laura Albert was feature in the Chicago Tribune with a travel editorial that was picked up by the Orlando Sentinel among nearly a dozen other outlets.

All excellent articles that stress the need to prepare ahead.   I am reminded of an early example that Gary Sullivan offered about pre-emergence management in 1977.  If I have gasoline on the floor and light match in my hand, the entire situation is easily solved by blowing out the match.  Once the match drops a gargantuan effort is needed.

The challenge is recognizing the need to blow out the match - putting the fire out is obvious.
