2025 has been proclaimed the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology by the United Nations. INFORMS is leveraging this UN proclamation to showcase work being done by INFORMS members at the intersection of quantum computing and operations research through a series of planned talks, webinars and articles.
Quantum technology has the potential to drive safer, more reliable, more resilient, and more sustainable rail systems, transforming how goods and people move worldwide. This presentation will provide an overview of quantum technology and discuss how the technology could be revolutionary for the railway industry. The presentation will cover:
l An overview of the key areas of quantum technology, including quantum computers, sensors and communications
l A discussion of the properties of quantum mechanics (superposition, entanglement, tunneling) that forms the basis of quantum technology
l The status of quantum technology – when will it become commercially viable?
l Possible ways quantum technology will impact the railway industry, including:
Quantum optimization to solve larger, more complex operational problems, such as the use of quantum annealing applied to problems like scheduling and dispatching
Quantum simulation to advance sustainability through improved designs of noncarbon-based locomotive fuel sources and improved material designs
Quantum sensors that are orders of magnitude more sensitive than existing sensors, providing opportunities for railway safety improvements
Quantum communications to provide more security transfer of messages and data
The presentation will close by discussing some planned INFORMS activities that will allow you to learn more about the interface between quantum technology and operations research.
Meet the Speaker
David Hunt, a Vice President in Oliver Wyman’s Transportation Practice, focuses on national and regional policy issues, transportation operations and strategic planning, and network modeling and operations research. He has worked with clients on six continents and across most modes of transportation, with a focus on rail. In 2017, David received the INFORMS President’s Award for his work on Pro Bono Analytics and the INFORMS Ethical Guidelines. Currently, David is serving as the 2025 President of INFORMS. He earned a B.S. in civil engineering from West Virginia University and a M.S.E. from the Civil Engineering and Operations Research Department at Princeton University.
