The INFORMS Information Systems Society (ISS) Spotlight Series highlights the broader narratives, influence, and real-world impact of IS scholarship. Through webinars and podcasts, the series features impactful research stories, industry cases that bridge theory and practice, and innovative teaching experiences within the IS community.

Can a single research agenda simultaneously reshape how Fortune 500 companies climb the AI ladder, train the next generation of data scientists, and produce top-tier publications? In the next ISS Spotlight session, Prof. Ravi Bapna will show how the answer is yes.

Speaker: Prof. Ravi Bapna (Curtis L. Carlson Chair Professor in Business Analytics and Information Systems, Carlson School of Management, University of Minnesota)

Time: 8:00–9:00 PM US Eastern Time, Monday, May 18

Title: Engaged Scholarship as a Model to Maximize Impact

Host: Prof. Jingjing Li (Andersen Alumni Associate Professor, Director of M.S. in Business Analytics, McIntire School of Commerce, University of Virginia)

    Abstract

What does it look like when rigorous IS research doesn't just get cited - but gets used? Prof. Ravi Bapna will present a model of engaged scholarship built on three interlocking gears: applied research, experiential learning, and executive education. He will share how he has turned peer-reviewed insights into tools that executives use on Monday morning - from co-founding mentorica.ai, an AI-powered mentoring platform born from his research, to building the Carlson Analytics Lab, a scalable experiential learning model that has helped dozens of companies climb the AI and analytics ladder. The session will also cover how executive education and book-writing create immediate, measurable impact beyond the journal page. Attendees will take away a practical framework for turning research into revenue, curriculum, and industry partnerships.
