Dear Dr. Capello,
Dear Jill,
Thank you very much for another exciting and inspiring challenge from you for the entire OR-MS community worldwide, and at the same time for indicating and remembering how important mathematics is to us in OR-MS, using one of its most charismatic numbers: Pi.
With its help, it was possible to show, as if with a breakthrough, that even so-called "irrational numbers" can be fundamentally important for understanding and describing nature, but also the culture we have helped to create.
For an example of how Pi Day is celebrated festively and joyfully in our OR-MS community, I would like to refer you to the report
Dave Evans, 2024 OR Events in South Africa. IFORS News, March 2025, pp. 23-24.
Happy Pi Day!
Many thanks to you again,
and also to the entire INFORMS team, which provides and maintains this valuable discussion forum.
With kind regards,
best wishes,
Willi (Gerhard-Wilhelm Weber)

In honor of the mathematical constant pi (π), how are you celebrating? A pie baking contest? A pi recitation contest?
And I'm sure you know this - why is pi represented by the lower case Greek letter, π ?
