  • 1.  Graduate programs and/or jobs in OR/sustainability/environmental science

Hi all - I have a student finishing her BS in math with a concentration in OR this month.  She is interested in the interface of OR and sustainability/environmental science. Could you let me know of any graduate programs in this area and/or places to look for jobs in this area?

    Thanks.

Betty, have your student check into the newly christened Doerr School of Sustainability at Stanford. With a quick look, I see OR-adjacent PhD opportunities in Energy Resources Engineering and Earth Systems Science. ERE also has a master's degree program that might be of interest. (This scratches the surface, really. Your student should do a deep dive; Sustainability is a major initiative at Stanford right now, and valuable opportunities may be buried deep under layers of HTML!)

I'll be remiss if I don't point out that the Institute for Computational & Mathematical Engineering, a part of the School of Engineering, could also be fertile ground for a mathematically-strong Sustainability-focused student:
    • MS: The general track of the ICME master's program allows students to build subject matter expertise in other departments; the track in Computational Geoscience (joint with Doerr) may also interest.
    • PhD: Our doctoral students range across disciplines, some of them Sustainability-related. For instance, they may research Tsunamis with profs in Civil & Environmental Engineering or supply chain resilience research with Business and Economics profs. Once they have demonstrated their readiness to do research, ICME's doctoral students can pick a research direction and advisor(s) across the University.
I'm afraid I can't provide specific guidance on the employment front, though I might aver that with the present turmoil in the broad tech sector, it seems like a great time to stay in school!

Tailwinds to your student. She's lucky to have someone informed and connected looking out for her future.

Luckily, in recent years many job platforms have emerged with a focus on sustainability or climate change. I'd recommend her to join job networks in LinkedIn and to follow key influencers there who frequently post jobs or green companies such as Daniel Hill and Seb Sharpe. Also, have her search for #opendoorclimate to hear advise from people working in the field and follow GreenBiz. Finally, she will find great job opportunities at ClimateBase and Terra.do.
If she wants to continue in academia I can provide advise on research topics.

    Hope this is helpful,
