Growing up I was a big fan of Asimov. He and Robert Heinlein were my top two sci-fi authors, in no particular order. There's no one book or short story by either of them that jumps to the top of my list. That said, the recent discussion / hype about AI has caused me to flash back more than once to Asimov's robot series, and specifically his notion of the positronic brain. He had what I thought at the time were novel and interesting ideas about how humanity might curb the freedom of AI-based automatons and to what extent they might have rights.

In honor of Isaac Asimov's birthday (January 2nd) as well as National Science Fiction Day, what is your opinion of Asimov? Are you a fan of his? If so, what's your favorite book? Or is there another sci-fi author you prefer?
