The INFORMS Data Mining Society is happy to announce our upcoming webinar:
Title: Culturally Relevant Pedagogy in Teaching Data-Centric Courses
Speaker: Travis Weiland, Assistant Professor, University of North Carolina-Charlotte
When: Friday, March 7, 2025, 12:00 - 1:00 PM ET (9:00 - 10:00 AM PT)
Where: Zoom Webinar (Link)
Abstract:
Context is unavoidable when dealing with data. It drives our questions, how we consider the data, how we explore and visualize it, and the models and decisions we make with it. Unfortunately, that aspect of data inquiry does not always get translated into our teaching of data-centric courses, where the content often becomes the central focus and context is just an interchangeable part that comes as goes as we wish. Context, however, provides a great opportunity to make instruction relevant to our students. In this webinar, Dr. Travis Weiland will discuss the main practices of culturally relevant pedagogy and how they can be translated into teaching data-centric courses in practical and meaningful ways. He will also talk about different entry points into beginning to use culturally relevant pedagogy and some of the pitfalls to beware of. Also, he will highlight some strategies for self-reflection as using culturally relevant pedagogy is a journey not a destination.
We invite you to join us for this engaging and insightful session.
