  • 1.  Choosing better problems to solve - my passion project

    Posted 20 days ago

Since grad school studying optimization I've been writing about problem-solving. I diligently tried to put into words what I saw as the distinctive way a lot of people with an OR background approached problem solving.

I'm now ready to share my new website meta-problem.com to teach people that way of thinking.

It's designed primarily as an educational site - aimed at anyone who wants to be a better problem solver. I explore the implications of our approach on a personal, business, and even societal level with questions like "How can we best fight climate change" or "which scientific innovations should we invest in?"

My most important realization over the past year is that "better problem solving" actually means choosing better problems to solve. So often it feels like we talk past each other because we see the best problem differently.

Please give the site a look. My inbox is also open if you have any suggestions.

I love how holistic the website is, Zohar. It showcases problem solving for so many diverse domains. There is something for everyone to takeaway.

    Zohar,

    Congratulations on your website!

When I taught how to solve optimization models which have only two variables, I replaced the terms "isoprofit line" and "isocost line" with "isovalue line". I did this to emphasize that OR models need not be about money. We might instead want to maximize access to health care or minimize pollution.
