We are pleased to announce the inaugural Child Welfare Operations Symposium, which will be held at Cornell University on Thursday, November 9, 2023, bringing together child welfare practitioners, thought leaders, and operations academics. Through roundtable discussions, panels, and brief research talks, we will use an operations lens to uncover systemic challenges and identify possible solutions. The event will focus on various topics related to child welfare, including responses to abuse and neglect reports, foster care, and adoption through public agencies.

To facilitate fruitful interactions and fit in the meeting space, the symposium is limited to approximately 15 academics and 15 practitioners. If you would like to attend, please submit the following form by Friday, September 29. Confirmation of participation will be sent by Friday, October 6.

The symposium will take place from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Statler Hall on Cornell's Ithaca campus.  Attendees are also invited to a casual networking reception on the evening of Wednesday, November 8. While meals will be provided, attendees should provide their own travel and lodging arrangements. There is no additional cost for the conference.

Please feel free to contact the conference chair, Vince Slaugh, at vslaugh@cornell.edu if you have any questions. There is much potential for interesting and impactful work in this area, and we are excited to explore this with you.

    Organizing Committee:

    Vince Slaugh (Chair), Cornell University

    Alan Scheller-Wolf, Carnegie Mellon University

    Andrew Trapp, Worcester Polytechnic Institute

In case anyone is interested in the child welfare domain or holding events similar to the Child Welfare Operations Symposium for other topics, here's a recap of last month's event with lessons learned by participants. Check out some practitioner reactions starting at 12:45 in the YouTube video linked here and embedded below

Hopefully, the symposium will lead to many more conversations and collaborations! Feel free to reach out to Alan Scheller-Wolf, Andrew Trapp, or me with any questions or if you'd like to be involved in future events. We all see great potential for operations research and analytics to help the vulnerable children and families whom the child welfare system is meant to serve.

Thanks for posting Vince!  It is an area where OR has a significant potential to do good for some of those who need it the most in society, particularly because the practitioner community is eager for our help.
