Dear INFORMs community,
As someone who actively decided to go into industry upon completing my PhD in the field, I recall having very little information on what skills I needed to hone to be a successful practitioner. This ranged from both technical skills as well as soft skills. Now having found my rhythm in applying OR in industry, I've teamed up with other colleagues to share our experiences and recommendations for members looking to explore a career in industry.
For those interested, please join us from September 30th to October 4th for an exploration of the world of Operations Research in Industry! Sign up at the theoptimizationchallenge.com to be a part of the 5 day, virtual event.
Here's what you can expect:
🌯 Monday, September 30th: Kick off with the Burrito Optimization Game challenge, a hands-on activity designed to challenge your problem-solving abilities and introduce you to the fun world of optimization.
🎤 Tuesday, October 1st: Get inspired by a video interview featuring Rubén Ruiz Principal Applied Scientist at Amazon. Gain valuable insights into the complexities of implementing optimization at a large scale.
📗 Wednesday, October 2nd: Explore the Playbook of Practical Operations Research, a detailed guide that will provide you with a toolkit of strategies, methodologies, and best practices for addressing complex challenges in your optimization projects.
🔄 Thursday, October 3rd: Participate in a live Zoom session where we discuss end-to-end OR project management. Share your experiences in scoping, formulating, solving, and deploying optimization solutions, and receive feedback from the organizers of the optimization sprint on their experiences.
💼 Friday, October 4th: Conclude the week with a live Career Panel on Zoom. We will share personal insights about our operations research journey, industry trends, and strategies for thriving in this dynamic field.
There will also be prizes given out to the most active participants.
We look forward to seeing future and current practitioners at this event.
Thanks,
Carlos A. Zetina
