The Mathematics Department at the U.S. Naval Academy invites applications for a postdoctoral fellow in our Operations Research group with an anticipated start date of August 2021, or as arranged. A hired candidate will work primarily with Assistant Professor Robert M. Curry on modeling and methodology for solving various network optimization problems in maritime settings. Modeling techniques will include but are not limited to integer and linear programming, two-stage optimization techniques, and network interdiction. The hired candidate will also work closely with Dr. Curry to formulate novel solution techniques for solving such problems. Problems found within these projects are directly related to operational and tactical decision-making in defense and military applications.
These project are expected to significantly impact defense and military decision-making in maritime settings. Thus, researchers will be expected to publish and present research results in appropriate professional peer-reviewed journals and venues. The research environment will provide mentoring and assistance from math and operations research faculty at USNA; and from experienced and decorated United States Navy and United States Marine Corps officers. Additionally, researchers will have the opportunity to interact with various Department of Defense labs. In addition to research responsibilities, the applicant will have the opportunity to assist in classroom instruction according to a mutual agreement between the candidate and Dr. Curry. A competitive salary is dependent on the experience and capability of the candidate. This is a two-year appointment.
