Much work in service science has a methodological foundation in applied probability and much work in applied probability is motivated by applications in the service sector. This joint special issue of Service Science (https://pubsonline.informs.org/journal/serv) and Stochastic Systems (https://pubsonline.informs.org/journal/stsy) aims to further promote the interface between these two fields and to strengthen the links between each journals' constituencies. The joint special issue seeks papers that could appear in either journal. Relative to papers submitted to Service Science alone, the special issue seeks papers with a strong foundation in applied probability. Relative to papers submitted to Stochastic Systems alone, the special issue seeks papers with a strong focus on the service sector. Papers need not be heavily methodological in nature; innovative modeling and/or empirical work is welcome, so long as the work strengthens the research agendas of those working in service science and applied probability in the judgment of the editorial team.
The special issue is jointly run through both journals. Papers will appear in only one journal. While authors can express a preference as to which journal publishes their paper, the editors of the special issue have the final say to ensure balance. Papers will appear simultaneously in both journals and be clearly cross-referenced to ensure that readers of each journal are aware of the complete joint special issue that spans both journals.
Stochastic Systems is an open-access journal while Service Science is not. The guest editors of the special issue are grateful to INFORMS, which has agreed to publish the special-issue papers appearing in Service Science under an open-access license and waive the usual charges for doing so. This generous decision reflects the importance they place on this venture.
Submissions should be directed either to the Service Science online submission system (https://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/serv) or to the Stochastic Systems online submission system (https://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/ssy), whichever journal the author believes is a better match for their paper. All submissions will be subject to the journal's standard peer review process. Criteria for acceptance include originality, contribution, and scientific merit. For submission guidelines, please see https://pubsonline.informs.org/page/serv/submission-guidelines or https://pubsonline.informs.org/page/stsy/submission-guidelines.
