Dear Colleagues,
As part of an effort to use our skills to help the natural world, The Center for Analytics Research and Education at Appalachian State University has partners with others to build and launch a free citizen science app to count the world's pollinators. Simply download the, take a picture of a pollinator (such as bees, moths, butterflies, bats, beetles and some birds) and upload it to the site.
Our goal is to build a repository of images with time and location information (anonymized and fuzzied) to share with the world for data mining and citizen data scientist activities. Over time we hope this project will grow.
3/4 of the types of crops we eat needed pollinators and many of our pollinators are in trouble. Consider helping by contributing to the data now and analyzing the data later.
We will be presenting the project at the U.N. Food and Agricultural Organizations celebration of World Bee Day next week and also hope to share information about the data and how to use it in your classes or research in a future conference.
Best,
Joseph
