U.S. Federal Policy Update
- The Senate brought the $500 billion "skinny" coronavirus relief package from Senate Republicans to the floor for a vote this afternoon. The bill failed to garner the 60 votes that were necessary for the bill to move forward, with a vote of 52 – 47 mostly along party lines. Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) joined Democrats to vote against the legislation. In response, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) released a statement – writing that Republicans should "join Democrats to pass a bill that is equal to the health and economic crisis."
- The Labor Department announced that another 884,000 Americans have filed for first-time unemployment insurance benefits over the past week.
- The Department of the Treasury published a readout of Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin's call with the Finance Ministers of the Five Eyes Nations – Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom. The leaders discussed the impact of COVID-19 and their nations' respective economic responses.
- The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced that as of September 14th, the federal government would "remove requirements for directing all flights carrying airline passengers arriving from, or recently had a presence in, certain countries to land at one of 15 designated airports and halt enhanced entry health screening for these passengers." These requirements currently apply to passengers arriving from China, Europe's Schengen region, Iran, the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Brazil.
- The Department of Defense released a readout from the White House Coronavirus Task Force's Governors briefing on the COVID-19 response. The Task Force discussed the national combined response from local, state, and national governments and updates on the COVID-19 vaccine progress and distribution plans.
- Assistant Health Secretary Brett Giroir stated that there will likely be "a lot of actions over the next few weeks" to authorize a higher number of at-home coronavirus tests.
State Update
- Maryland Governor Larry Hogan (R) announced that the state has purchased 250,000 rapid antigen tests as part of a bipartisan interstate testing compact. The compact also includes Arkansas, Massachusetts, Ohio, Utah, Louisiana, Michigan, North Carolina, Rhode Island, and Virginia.
- New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio (D) outlined the precautions that restaurants in the city must adhere to as they approach the resumption of indoor dining services on September 30th. These enhanced precautions include temperature checks at every entrance, collection of test and trace data from at least one customer per table, 25% occupation limits, and more.
Global Response
- India set a global record today for the highest number of COVID-19 cases to be reported in a single day – with at least 95,735 new positive cases reported in the country.
- French Scientific Adviser Jean- François Delfraissy stated that the country "cannot completely rule out local lockdowns," given the recent surges in coronavirus cases.
- The Indonesian government announced that the capital city of Jakarta would not move forward in its reopening process, due to a resurgence of positive cases.
Economic Update
- U.S. stocks dropped suddenly at the end of the day today, with all three indices closing the day with losses. The Nasdaq Composite fell by 1.99%, the S&P 500 by 1.76%, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average by 1.45%.
