Student Chapter Bylaws Bylaws for the NYIT INFORMS Student Chapter of the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences

ARTICLE I – NAME
This organization has been named as the NYIT5INFORMS Student Chapter hereinafter the Chapter of the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS).
ARTICLE II – PURPOSES
  • Organize field trips to service/manufacturing companies for students interested in OR/MS to understand various corporate cultures and application of OR/MS concepts
  • Organize seminars/workshops for students who are interested in OR/MS to learn the latest developments
  • Organize intercollege competitions among students to solve OR/MS problems
  • Organize community workshops for imparting knowledge about OR/MS tools and applications
  • Provide opportunities to students and members to solve real OR/MS problems
ARTICLE III – MEMBERSHIP
  1. Students who have interests in OR/MS shall submit membership applications to become members of this chapter. Membership in the national INFORMS organization (the Institute) is not mandatory.

  2. The regular membership is open to all types of students of NYIT campuses at $10.

  3. All the elected officers should be members of INFORMS and carry equal rights and responsibilities.

  4. Chapter dues should be paid in the month of January.

  5. Membership and participation shall be free from discrimination on any bias.

  6. At any time, the Chapter must have at least ten members.

ARTICLE IV – OFFICERS
  1. The following are the officers who represent the Executive Board of this Chapter: President is the chief of this chapter who presides all the meetings, represents this Chapter in outside undertakings, and mentors the Chapter officers.

    • Vice President executes responsibilities of President in his/her absence and organizes social activities/programs and maintains a calendar in the first year. In the following year, he/she becomes the president of this Chapter. Secretary handles amendments to this Chapter’s bylaws, announces meetings, and maintains correspondence with the Institute. This officer is responsible to submit annual report describing activities performed to the Institute. Treasurer is the in5charge of all budgetary matters in this Chapter including receipt of all money related reports from the Institute and movement of monetary data in relation to enrollment.

    • Secretary handles amendments to this Chapter’s bylaws, announces meetings, and maintains correspondence with the Institute. This officer is responsible to submit annual report describing activities performed to the Institute.

    • Treasurer is the in-charge of all budgetary matters in this Chapter including receipt of all money related reports from the Institute and movement of monetary data in relation to enrollment.

  2. Terms of Office: All the officers, except Vice President, elected to run this Chapter will execute their responsibilities for one year. Vice President will serve for two years.

  3. Nominations and Elections: During the February general meeting, nominations and elections will be made. Only the members of this Chapter who are “in good standing” can nominate other members or self5nominate themselves for the officers’ postings. President or Vice President in the absence of President, can organize a meeting on any month to elect an officer, if a particular position is vacant. The elected officers collectively can make some appointments that are necessary to carry out smooth operations of this Chapter.

  4. Voting: Any nominated candidate who attracts majority of members’ favors will be selected for the particular vacant position. This favor will be requested through a secret ballot. If any candidates have received equal favors, one will be randomly selected.

  5. Removal from Office: An officer who deviates from the moral standards or fails to execute their responsibilities can be removed from the post if majority of four elected officers agrees for the removal.

ARTICLE V – MEETINGS
  1. All the Chapter members should be invited for the general meetings. Officers shall set time, venue, and agenda for this meeting and announce at least a week in advance through emails.

  2. The general meeting will be held in the last week of January every year.

  3. Executive Board meetings will be attended only by Board members, and President takes care of these meetings.

  4. At least four meetings shall be organized for this Chapter.

ARTICLE VI – RESPONSIBILITIES TO INFORMS
  1. The Chapter and its officers are accountable to the Institute for all operations and procedures. The INFORMS Board may suspend this Chapter for the inappropriate operations/procedures.

  2. Secretary of this Chapter should forward the activities report to INFORMS in the last week of January every year (31st January is the last date to send the report).

ARTICLE VII – DUES

Dues ($10) should be paid while members join the Chapter or renew their membership. All the transactions will be managed by the Treasurer.

ARTICLE VIII – AMENDMENTS AND PROCEDURE

The Secretary of this Chapter will present the amendments to the bylaws to the President. President announces these amendments to members for discussions. Meeting shall be conducted on the 14th day from the date of announcement to change the bylaws. Two5thirds of members’ consents are required to pass the amendments. President of this Chapter forward the amendments to the INFORMS liaison who will again forward it to the INFORMS Subdivisions Council that approves/disapproves the amendments. A quorum consists of at least five members is required to carry out business of the Chapter in a general meeting or other meetings.
