Harvey Mudd College invites applications for a tenure-track position in mathematics, beginning Fall 2018, at the assistant professor level (or at the associate professor level in exceptional cases). All areas broadly related to mathematical data science and data analytics will be considered. Data science is a growing area of interest in our department, and may include studies of real data through statistics, probability, operations research, mathematical biology, linear algebra, geometry, topology, abstract algebra, graph theory, numerical analysis, scientific computing, optimization, or applied and industrial mathematics. The new faculty member will have the opportunity to play an important role in the development of data science initiatives.

The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. by the time of appointment, a demonstrated excellence in teaching, and a strong research program that can effectively contribute to our many undergraduate research activities, which include summer research, senior thesis, and math-in-industry senior capstone projects. Harvey Mudd College is committed to broadening the participation of students in STEM fields. Therefore, experience with or demonstrated ability to teach or mentor underrepresented students are among the criteria for appointment.

Harvey Mudd College is a highly selective undergraduate institution of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. It is located in Claremont, CA, which is approximately 35 miles east of Los Angeles, at the foot of the San Gabriel Mountains. All students enter having already taken calculus or beyond, and about two-thirds scored between 780 and 800 on their SAT 2 in Math. The college enrolls about 850 students and is a member of the Claremont Colleges, which is comprised of five undergraduate colleges, the Claremont Graduate University, and the Keck Graduate Institute of Applied Life Sciences. Harvey Mudd College enthusiastically welcomes applications from talented individuals from all cultural backgrounds. The College is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer. Qualified applicants will be given consideration for employment without regard to age, race, gender, national origin, sexual orientation, protected veteran's status, disability, or any other characteristics protected by applicable law. The College's Equal Opportunity and Nondiscrimination Statement and information about accommodations is available upon request.

The Department of Mathematics at Harvey Mudd College has been recognized as a leader in teaching, research, undergraduate research mentoring, and educational outreach. In 2006, the American Mathematical Society recognized the department with its inaugural award for Exemplary Program or Achievement in a Mathematics Department. Each year there are about 40 graduates in the mathematical sciences. The teaching load is five courses semester-long per year, including research courses and courses in the college's core curriculum. Further information about the college and the department can be found at http://www.hmc.edu/ and http://www.math.hmc.edu/.

Applicants should submit: (1) A cover letter. All cover letters must specifically address (a) how an applicant's research and teaching interests will contribute to the strengths of the department, in particular with respect to data science initiatives, and (b) information about the applicant's interests or experiences in promoting inclusion and diversity in the mathematical sciences. (2) A curriculum vitae. (3) A research statement. (4) A teaching statement. (5) Three letters of recommendation. At least one letter should specifically address teaching.
