"The best way to learn is to do; the worst way to teach is to talk." - Paul Halmos

That quote from the famous mathematician Paul Halmos speaks to his idea of effective teaching.  Relying on books and lectures for teaching does a disservice to students.  The target audience for The 2017 Teaching Effectiveness Colloquium is graduate students that are about to enter the academic job market and new or seasoned faculty looking to stay abreast of the "best practices" regarding OR/MS/Analytics pedagogy. Sessions are organized around topics such as teaching fundamental topics like optimization, successful methods for implementing acting and experiential learning methods, along with the use of case studies and social media in courses.  The colloquia will feature speakers from business and engineering schools who will address different aspects of incorporating and assessing effective teaching techniques in any undergraduate or graduate curriculum.

This colloquium is one of three offered by INFORMS; others include the 2017 Doctoral Student Colloquium and the New Faculty Colloquium.  All will be held in Houston, TX on Friday, October 20 and Saturday, October 21, ahead of the INFORMS Annual Meeting.  The colloquia will begin on Friday evening with a welcome dinner for all participants and will continue all day Saturday with informative sessions, good food, and plenty of time to socialize and network.  All colloquia participants must also register for the INFORMS Annual Meeting.  The cost is $85 for students, $215 for all others.

The deadline is fast approaching! All nomination packages must be received by August 30, so please respond today! The chairs of the individual colloquia are Dr. Mihai Banciu (TEC), Dr. Sandra Eksioglu (DSC), and Dr. Aurelie Thiele and Dr. Julie Simmons Ivy (NFC).

We look forward to seeing you in Houston!
