Special Issue on Emerging Mobility Systems
Modern transportation systems have been transforming rapidly in recent years, ranging from individual vehicle technologies to system level management. On the one hand, a series of vehicle technology innovations have blossomed in the past couple of decades, just to name a few, connected vehicles, self-driving cars, electric vehicles, Hyperloop, and even flying cars. They may radically change behaviors and mechanisms of not only individual transportation elements but also a whole transportation system. On the other hand, transportation system operations are experiencing a paradigm shift from infrastructure-based traffic management into individual-traveler-centered mobility services, such as carsharing, ridesharing, and on-demand services. These innovations and breakthroughs have motivated researchers on Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) to expand the frontiers of ITS concepts and skillsets, to identify new opportunities and challenges in integrating emerging vehicle technologies and mobility services, and to produce theories, models, field experiments and real world applications for establishing a unique ITS discipline. To this end, this special issue is focused on cutting edge ideas, knowledge, techniques, tools and applications in the broad areas on emerging vehicle technologies and mobility services. Topics of specific interest include, but are not limited to:
- Integration of vehicle technologies and mobility services
- Innovations of new technologies that impact future mobility
- Applications of emerging vehicle technologies in transportation systems
- Ideas and paradigms of new mobility services
- Mobility data analytics
- Field experiments and real-world deployment of emerging vehicle technologies
- Theorems, models and algorithms on planning and managing new mobility services
- Traffic flow control with emerging technologies and services
- Impacts of emerging technologies and services on transportation system safety, efficiency, energy consumption and environmental footprints

Aims & Scope of the Journal
The IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Magazine (ITSM) publishes peer-reviewed articles that provide innovative research ideas and application results, report significant application case studies, and raise awareness of pressing research and application challenges in all areas of intelligent transportation systems. In contrast to the highly academic publication of the IEEE Transactions on Intelligent Transportation Systems, the ITS Magazine focuses on providing needed information to all members of IEEE ITS society, serving as a dissemination vehicle for ITS Society members and the others to learn the state of the art development and progress on ITS research and applications.
