I agree!
Nowadays with vlog, social media being popular, I feel that kind of bias is getting less but still pretty strong within people I know.
I tried to tell people how my hometown, or the countries I've been to are like, but of course it's hard for people who never been there to understand. Instead, I started telling people to explore the world themselves and the world will be different. Soon I have friends travelling to different countries and sharing the travel stories with me. Love love the stories and experience.
Same reason that I love travelling. There are always things that I don't know until I'm really there and there are always experience that cannot be described with words.

Be careful of people who tell you not to do something when they have not experienced it themselves.
Before my first international assignment (Zimbabwe and the Ghana), for years, I was told by many people, especially family and friends, not to go because it was too dangerous, very dirty and poor, or I would catch an incurable disease. Then I realized people were giving me advice on something they have only seen on US televisions. This was in 2002. After that trip, I realized I wanted to live overseas. I have worked in about 30 low to middle income countries, and since 2021, I have been working in living in South Africa. I have loved every country where I have worked and could possible live in them. The work is wonderful, the people are very hospitable, and every country has its own beauty. I could have enjoyed my life much more sooner is I had not listed to people with no experience and were biases only by the US media that has always portrayed Africa and Asia as wastelands.

How lovely! I think this might be one of the best pieces of advice I have ever come across.

I would like to pass along one more piece of advice, from my mother:
Any job worth doing is worth doing well!
Note, this does not say "perfectly" but more along the lines of the best you can do in the particular circumstances. Doing a job well also adds to your personal satisfaction and your to your self-image.

Do what you love. And learn to love what you do. Both will make you happy give you purpose and a reason to jump into the next challenge.

I would say-
- Make as many friends as you can and try to build some traditions with them
- Find and stick to two hobbies at least- one which requires a lot of physical effort such as running, and the other which you can do indoors and brings you peace such as gardening
- Start learning a foreign language
What would you say?
