I am sorry to share the sad news that Dr. Ismael de-Farias, Associate Professor in the Department of Industrial, Manufacturing, and Systems Engineering at Texas Tech University,  and dear friend and colleague passed away on Wednesday, August 3. He was a member of our department for fourteen years.  His passing is a great loss to all of us. As you know if you met him, he was a wonderful person and cared a great deal for others, especially his students.

Ismael was well-known in the optimization world for his research contributions in integer programming, discrete optimization and most recently in quantum computing and quantum optimization. He was a scholar who loved engaging with students and in intellectual discussions. Due to the breadth of his work he had many friends in the operations research community.

While he was very passionate about his research and teaching, his family was the most important thing to him. Dr. De-Farias is survived by his wife and four children.
