BALTIMORE, MD, February 6, 2025 – As local newsrooms continue to shrink and news deserts grow, citizen journalists are stepping in to sustain coverage, but a new study in the INFORMS journal Management Science reveals just how critical their role is – and the consequences of their absence.

    Dear Dr. Smith,
    Dear Ashley,

Thank you very much again for another interesting and fresh impulse.

Actually, the initiative "Study Reveals How Everyday People Are Shaping Local News – And Why It Matters Now More Than Ever" is all the more valuable because it also addresses the place of INFORMS and the entire OR-MS community in today's world, in terms of engagement and commitment, information and service, individually and collectively (together).

In fact, it  contributes to the construction, formation and shaping of our future modern societies and their economies, based on their composition from more local units and their local - inner- and outer-local, intra- and inter-local - coherence and complementarity within, as it often seems to us, complex and hard local-regional and local-global dichotomies.

Here I may mention two research approaches and projects of recent 40 years, each of them from OR-MS, mathematics and economics:

    (i) Collaboration and coopetition between "players" both inside local units and between them. Game theory contributes to modelling these and overcoming antagonisms for something better and higher, today and in future.

(ii) Topological instruments of optimization and optimal control, each continuous or discrete, are used to combine and "glue" together regional or global systems from local ones, before solving them altogether. This can be done in finite as well as in infinite dimensions, herewith addressing various needs of many participants and components.

The two approaches and projects have been pursued at RWTH Aachen, TU Darmstadt, METU Ankara and PUT Poznan. If you are interested in an exchange, I can provide details and names.

    Many thanks to you again,

and to the whole INFORMS team, which faithfully provides this valuable forum for exciting exchange.

    With friendly regards,
    best wishes,
    Willi (Gerhard-Wilhelm Weber)
