Great reply, John. I would agree that prompt engineering is important now. As AI continues to evolve, perhaps the techniques for Prompts will change. That brings me back to your first point - domain knowledge - which will continue to be critically important.

It seems to me that writing good prompts (and iterating with a large language model (LLM) such as ChatGPT) requires strong domain knowledge. Those with strong domain knowledge in a particular industry and/or technology should spend a small fraction of their time interacting with LLMs. However, I suspect those who do so will be more successful writing prompts (and iterating) with LLMs that professional Prompt Engineers whose primary skill is interacting with LLMs. Prompt Engineering skills should be learned by all of us. LLMs are tools we should get better at using, analogous to how we have learned to create well-structured spreadsheets and powerpoint slides to supplement our core OR knowledge. We don't talk about Excel Engineers or Powerpoint Engineers. I could be wrong. Practical LLMs are so new, lots of us are figuring this out.

As the field of artificial intelligence (AI) is evolving at an unprecedented pace, with generative AI models like GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 revolutionizing how we interact with technology. Amid this transformation, the role of prompt engineering has emerged as a critical component in harnessing the power of these AI systems. But is prompt engineering truly the top career in the post-generative AI revolution job market?
I would love to know your opinion on this.
Thank you.
