- The freight rail network can be vulnerable to planned or unplanned disruptions, such as maintenance and accidents. Understanding not only capacity but also resiliency of the railway network is crucial to handle increasing overall demand for freight transportation on fixed network infrastructure. A novel railway network simulation model including hump yards and mainline interactions under various resource constraints has been developed to investigate the network-level impact of a classification yard derailment. The model aims to reveal the propagation and recovery of operational consequence of derailments and other disruption events or traffic peaks, which can help railway practitioners make optimal decisions regarding allocating resources, making train plans, and implementing strategies to mitigate delay after incidents in classification yards.
Meet the Speaker
- Jiaxi is a recent PhD graduate from the University of Texas at Austin, Jiaxi has over 9 years of academic experience in railway engineering. Her research has focused on railroad operations, railway network simulation, resiliency analysis, derailment risks, and yard and mainline capacity studies. Her dissertation topic is "Simulation of Hump Classification Yard Performance: Railway Network Resiliency and Operational Consequences of Yard Derailments".
