INFORMS is deeply saddened to report the passing of Robert M. Solow. He is most well known to the INFORMS community for his classic book from 1958, Linear Programming and Economic Analysis, co-authored with Robert Dorfman and Paul Samuelson. This book did at least two notable things: a) introduced optimization, particularly the then new methodology of linear programming, to the economics profession, and b) made very explicit that linear programming could be used for planning over time, i.e., over multiple periods. Solow received the Nobel Memorial Prize in 1987 for his work analyzing how various economies grow over time, some slow, some fast. You can learn more about Solow's incredible career and many contributions in the INFORMS History & Traditions library.
