  • 1.  Cultivating an analytics culture - best ways to benchmark organizational progress?

    I am looking for good examples of how large organizations track their progress incorporating analytics capabilities (from descriptive through diagnostic to predictive and prescriptive).  What I am most interested in is how firms have set and validated business targets based on anticipated analytics capabilities maturing and coming on line.

    Hi Travis,

    Have you explored the Analytics Maturity Model that INFORMS developed a couple of years ago?

    It is available at no cost, online at: https://analyticsmaturity.informs.org/

    There are 3 main areas (organization, analytics capability, and data & infrastructure), each with 4 subordinate areas.  Look at the User Guide (link in upper right corner) for more detail.

    I also know that some organizations have had facilitated reviews using this framework and found them to be useful.  Happy to provide more information directly.

    Hello, Travis.

    You may already have run across this, but the Thomas Davenport/Jeanne Harris 2007 book, "Competing on Analytics" offers and analytics maturity framework with specific indicators for the maturity stages of different capabilities.  There are many anecdotes about companies' experience in building an analytics culture in this and the later Davenport/Harris books.
