I am Yuquan (Bill) Du, a lecturer (Assist. Prof.) at Australian Maritime College, University of Tasmania (UTAS). I am attracting a PhD student working on optimization models and algorithms for the maritime industry. The research and living cost of this student in Australia will be funded by John Bicknell Scholarship. The John Bicknell Scholarship is equivalent to a University of Tasmania Elite scholarship (current APA rate AU$26,288 + AU$7,500 top-up = AU$33,788 per annum), with additional operational funds of up to $5,000 per annum, for a term of 3 years (with a possible 6 month extension).

This student will conduct research at UTAS on the project “Models and Algorithms for Scheduling Ships through the Navigation Channel at a Tidal Port”. For more information about this project and the application procedure, see the document “Models and Algorithms for Scheduling Ships through the Navigation Channel at a Tidal Port” at http://www.amc.edu.au/research/research-scholarships/john-bicknell-scholarship.

For the commencement date of this applicant at UTAS, it depends on whether the applicant is domestic or international, and when she/he accept this offer. The maximum date, however, is the 1st of December, 2017.

English language requirement are stated at the link: http://www.utas.edu.au/research/degrees/what-is-a-research-degree. It is possible for UTAS to raise the requirements of English test score next year. According to the information at this link, please note that an English test score meeting the requirements would be provided when lodging the application (CLOSING DATE: 11:59pm (AEST), Tuesday 31 January 2017), but it is NOT mandatary. However, I still strongly recommend taking an IELTS exam (or exams J) ASAP.

Students with one of the following backgrounds are welcome: Applied Mathematics (Operations Research, Statistics), Automation (Control Theory and Control Engineering), Computer Science, Industrial Engineering, Management Science and Engineering, and Traffic and Transportation Engineering. Students with strong expertise of optimisation theories and good coding skills (MATLAB/C++/Python/Java, etc) are extremely welcome. As an active researcher, I will be reading papers with you, finding research topics with you, modelling with you, coding with you, debugging with you, drafting manuscripts with you, revising papers with you, …, all the time with you, until you are called a researcher. I hope you could enjoy the happiness and honours endowed by research. Please drop me a line if you are interested in this scholarship: yuquan.du@utas.edu.au.
