CALL FOR APPLICATIONS FOR THE 2020 "DOING GOOD WITH GOOD OR" PAPER COMPETITION

INFORMS is seeking applications for the 2020 Doing Good with Good OR student paper competition.

The competition encourages student research that has practical focus and societal impact. The competition features the most exciting projects performed by students in partnership with public and private organizations. Entries to the competition must have, or are likely to have, a significant, verifiable and preferably quantifiable impact for the partner organization and the broader society. The projects might also strive to include innovation through theory and creative computational methods. The submission requirements, timeline and eligibility criteria are summarized below:

    Submission Requirements

    • Nomination letter from the partner organization describing the practical aspects of the work and its importance to the partner organization and broader society.
    • Nomination letter by an academic advisor describing the implementation and societal impact of the work. The letter from the academic advisor should also explain and elaborate on the portion of the work (including the project duration) solely completed by the student entrant(s) during the time they were enrolled full-time in a degree-granting program (undergraduate or graduate).
    • Up to three-page (excluding references/citations) summary document that describes what the entrants accomplished (focusing on the societal impact and the centrality of the operations research and management science tools used).
    • 600 character abstract of the work (including spaces)

    Timelines:

The completed applications are due May 15, 2020. Finalists will be announced by end of June 2020 and asked to submit a full paper by September 2020. Finalists' full papers (limited to a maximum of 30 pages) will describe the research problem, employed operations research/management science tools and the outcomes.

    Eligibility Requirements:

    • Main contributor(s) must be a full-time student(s) (undergraduate or graduate) in a degree-granting program during the period in which the study was performed. Other contributors may include members of the partner organization and faculty advisor(s)
    • The project submitted must not have won a prize or been a finalist in a previous Doing Good with Good OR student competition.
    • Study must have been completed within the last 3 years.
    • No student entrants can be a contributor on more than one submission to the competition.
