The Decision Analysis Practice Award is sponsored jointly by the Decision Analysis Society and the Society of Decision Professionals. It is given annually to the best decision analysis application, as judged by a panel of members of both Societies.

The winners were announced during the INFORMS conference that was held earlier this week.

This year the DAS/SDP Practice Award has two winner projects, each one of them representing an outstanding contribution to the practice of Decision Analysis. The winner projects are:

     ·    Joice Ribeiro Giacon, Gustavo Martins and Kislan Santos (from Optimum Supply) with the project "Optimum Supply: e-procurement decision analysis platform to maximize the value of strategic sourcing choices".

     ·    Saurabh Bansal (from Penn State University) and Genaro Gutierrez (from University of Texas at Austin) with the project:  "Use of judgmental forecasts with expert heterogeneity to support biofuel jet fuels in a Federal Aviation Administration Program".

The Optimum Supply team has developed an advanced e-procurement decision analysis system that is supporting strategic sourcing choices and providing significant value to its clients. This decision support system constitutes a new field of applications in supply chain management for decision analysis, which can value sustainability, intangible, and strategic aspects in the choices of suppliers. In addition, their online platform is providing a new way of conducting decision analysis, which is highly relevant for our DAS and SDP communities. The platform is fully embedding decision analysis into recurrent and important organizational decision processes, hence increasing the adoption of decision analysis and reducing set up costs of decision analysis interventions.

Saurabh Bansal and Genaro Gutierrez have developed an innovative and advanced decision analysis method for the definition of probability distributions from expert point estimates. Their method has been supporting the FAA in the choice of biofuels, by improving the expert assessments of the biomass potential for new varieties of agricultural crops. The project excels in the close links between decision analysis research and decision analysis practice and provides significant improvements to FAA's evaluation of options. The field of application is highly relevant for our DAS and SDP communities, given the importance of biofuels in enabling reductions of emissions, improving the sustainability of aviation, and supporting the regeneration of degraded land.
