Job Announcement: Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Healthcare Systems Engineering

Deadline for Application: The position is open until filled, though preference will be given to those who apply by September 30, 2017.
Job Description: The research group of Dr. Diego Martinez at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to develop and expand a machine learning-based model of hospital asset management. The successful candidate will adapt and deploy this model to support daily decision-making of hospital equipment allocation, and measure its impact on delays of patient care, front-line caregiver productivity, and costs. There will be opportunities to study hospital operations dynamics as the model interacts with the electronic medical records and a real-time location system. The successful candidate will interact with multiple groups across the hospital such as Department of Emergency Medicine, Department of Surgery, Materials Management, Clinical Engineering, Nursing, Perioperative Services, and Bed Management. Candidates with data science background and healthcare systems engineering research interest are encouraged to apply.
The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. in systems engineering, industrial engineering, operations management, computer science, applied mathematics and statistics, or a related discipline, though candidates with Master's degrees or Doctoral degrees in other fields (e.g., medicine, business, economics) with strong quantitative and computing skills will also be considered. Familiarity with healthcare delivery modeling is highly desirable, as is coding experience in R and SQL. The successful candidate must be able to work independently and will be responsible for carrying out her/his research and for communicating the results to others.
We seek a one-year commitment, with preference given to applicants who can start quickly; continuation beyond one year will be based on performance and availability of funds. Due to the timing of funding availability, we can only consider U.S. citizens, U.S. permanent residents, or existing visa holders for this position.
To Apply: Applicants should submit: 1) a cover letter describing your research interests and experience, 2) a curriculum vitae, 3) contact information for two references including names, e-mail addresses, and telephone numbers, 4) up to 2 representative publications. Submit applications and address questions to Dr. Diego Martinez (dmart101@jhmi.edu). Please include "Healthcare Systems Engineering Postdoc" in the subject line of the email.
