The Departments of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Industrial and Management Systems Engineering at the University of South Florida (USF) are jointly seeking one postdoctoral researcher to work on an EPA project titled "Temporal and Spatial Optimization of Existing and Emerging Nutrient Management Technologies and Practices for Control of Harmful Algal Blooms" (https://cfpub.epa.gov/ncer_abstracts/index.cfm/fuseaction/display.abstractDetail/abstract/11100). Our team of investigators includes experts in water resources management,  environmental engineering, and operations research.

The goal of the project is to optimize implementation of watershed-based nutrient treatment technologies and management practices (i.e., the right technologies/practices implemented at the right time and location) for effective Harmful Algae Bloom (HAB) control using Lake Okeechobee (Florida) and its dynamic watershed as a context.

The successful applicant will be expected to  integrate hydrodynamic and water quality simulation models with optimization tools, work closely with stakeholders,  assist in project management, and mentor a diverse group of graduate and undergraduate students. The successful applicant will be expected to have strong water quality modeling and mathematical programming skills.

Applicants should hold a Ph.D. degree in civil and environmental engineering, industrial engineering, operations research, computer science or a related field; have a record of high impact peer-reviewed journal publications; prior experience with designing and implementing hydrodynamic-water quality modeling, mathematical programming and optimization algorithms, and excellent communication skills. Interested applicants should send an application package including a cover letter, CV, a list of representative journal publications, and the names of three references to Dr. Qiong Zhang (qiongzhang@usf.edu), Dr. Mauricio Arias (mearias@usf.edu), and Dr. Hadi Charkhgard (hcharkhgard@usf.edu).

The University of South Florida is a high-impact, global research university dedicated to student success. USF is a Top 50 research university among both public and private institutions nationwide in total research expenditures, according to the National Science Foundation. The University of South Florida is an Equal Opportunity/Equal Access/Affirmative Action Institution. Women and minorities are strongly encouraged to apply.

The position is available immediately and applications will be reviewed until the position is filled. The initial appointment will be for one year and may be extended for another two years contingent on satisfactory performance and availability of funding.
