We invite chemists, chemical engineers, statisticians, applied mathematicians, and computer scientists to apply for the Data in Chemistry Innovation Lab, which will be held at Airlie House in Warrenton, VA, on 17-21 December 2018. The Innovation Lab is sponsored by the Division of Chemistry (CHE) and Division of Mathematics Science (DMS) at the National Science Foundation (NSF). Participant travel expenses will be covered by the grant.

The purpose of the Innovation Lab is to leverage the power of data science to address urgent challenges in chemistry, thereby advancing both fields. An Innovation Lab is a deliberate, creative process of generating novel research ideas, through face-to-face meetings.  It also enables the participants from different fields to become acquainted with each other's languages and develop new research ideas at the interface. Specifically, the lab will promote the development of effective interdisciplinary approaches to chemical problems; advance data-science methodologies for the physical sciences; and lead to long-term, strong collaborations between two historically non-overlapping fields.

We envision that the 5-day Lab will bring together 20 chemists and 20 data scientists, to start collaborative projects on site. While all areas of chemistry are of interest, preference will be given to areas that are central to chemistry research but have received little attention from data science thus far. Data scientists with interest in developing new methodologies are especially encouraged to apply. Applicants with strong interests in creative problem solving and forming interdisciplinary collaborations will be selected to attend.

Please visit our website at https://hub.ki/groups/datainspiredchemistry for additional information on the scope and vision of the Innovation Lab, as well as the online application process. An online webinar to introduce and discuss the Innovation Lab will be held October 18th, 2018 at 1:30 PM EST. Applications will be due Friday, October 26th, 2018, at 8 PM EST.
