When INFORMS set out to create its Continuing Education program, it put educators at the center of the development. Anyone who has ever sat through a dry lecture disguised as a professional development course knows that a good instructor can make all the difference. INFORMS continuing education instructors are that difference. Dr. Barry Lawson is Associate Professor of Computer Science and the Computer Science Coordinator at the University of Richmond. He also is an instructor for INFORMS Introduction to Monte Carlo and Discrete-Event Simulation workshop. From his 2nd grade teacher, Ms. Nancy Hincher, to high school AP calculus teacher Dr. Emmet Lowe, to Dr. Steve Park in grad school, great teachers encouraged and facilitated his individual learning process. Those educators inspired him to teach. As a PhD student, Barry got the opportunity to teach his first course and, seeing a similar impact that he could have on students, it sparked his love of teaching. Now computer science students at the University of Richmond, and analytics and data science professionals who take INFORMS Introduction to Monte Carlo and Discrete-Event Simulation workshop, get to experience Barry’s passion for teaching. (FYI - The INFORMS workshop is just a wee bit less expensive!)
