Department: Applied Health Sciences/Biomedical and Health Information Sciences

    Category: Postdoc Res Assoc

    Location: Chicago

    Close Date: 03/01/2022

Description: The University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) invites applications for a prestigious Bridge to the Faculty Postdoctoral Research Associate that the Department of Biomedical and Health Information Sciences (BHIS) was recently awarded. This position will begin on August 16, 2022.

Purpose: Bridge to the Faculty Scholars Program is designed to attract promising scholars with the goal of recruiting, mentoring and supporting their transition to a tenure-track faculty position. The initial position involves an appointment as a Postdoctoral Research Associate. After the first year, and subject to satisfactory performance and University approval, this position may be re-appointed for a second year. A successful post-doctoral scholar in the Bridge to the Faculty program may have the opportunity to transition to tenure-track faculty at UIC starting in the 2024-2025 academic year. More information can be found at https://diversity.uic.edu/engagement/bridge-to-the-faculty/.

The Bridge to the Faculty Scholars Program seeks to advance diversity on the permanent faculty level by encouraging the recruitment, retention, and promotion of outstanding scholars from different backgrounds, with an emphasis on attracting individuals from groups who have been historically underrepresented in science. The determined goal of this fellowship is to recruit, mentor, and support the transition of outstanding candidates from postdoctoral assignments to research-active, tenure-track faculty members. UIC strongly encourages applications from individuals who have demonstrated a background and/or record of scholarship. Given the extensive diversity of UIC's student population, a successful applicant will demonstrate an understanding of barriers affecting populations traditionally underrepresented in the STEM fields and groups that are traditionally marginalized in the United States.

In addition to mentorship within the Department of Biomedical and Health Information Sciences, the Postdoctoral Research Associate will participate in a cohort-based mentoring experience through the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Diversity, Equity, and Engagement where they will have the opportunity to meet other Bridge to the Faculty Scholars. The Bridge to the Faculty Scholars Program is funded by the Chancellor's Office and is administered through the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Diversity, Equity, and Engagement.

Eligibility: The Department of Biomedical and Health Information Sciences is looking for a dynamic Postdoctoral Research Associate in Health Informatics or any closely allied field (e.g., Clinical Informatics, Biomedical Informatics, Nursing Informatics, Data Science, Decision Science, Human Factors Engineering, Operations Research, or Computer Science) who will contribute to increase the visibility of the department through scholarly work published in high-impact journals and conferences and help secure federal and/or industrial grants.

UIC seeks applicants whose creative work/research, teaching and service will contribute to diversity and equal opportunity in higher education. The program is particularly interested in scholars with the potential to bring to their academic careers the critical perspective that comes from their non-traditional educational background or understanding of the experiences of groups historically underrepresented in higher education. The position is available in the Fall 2022 semester and the initial term of employment will be for 12 months.  Subject to satisfactory performance, and University approval, you may be re-appointed for one additional year. Successful postdocs in the Bridge to the Faculty program may have the opportunity to transition to tenure-track faculty at UIC starting in the 2024-2025 academic year. Candidates must have received a Ph.D. in Biomedical or Health Informatics or a closely related field no earlier than August 16, 2018 and no later than August 16, 2022.

Context: Located in the heart of one of the most vibrant cities in the United States, UIC is a comprehensive urban public research (R1) university with a diverse student body and a strong tradition of support for difference and equality. Part of the University of Illinois land grant higher education system, UIC is among the nation's top five most diverse campuses; it is designated as a Minority Serving Institution (MSI), an Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institution (AANAPISI), and a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI). UIC's undergraduate population is currently 26.4% Hispanic, 23.1% Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander, 7.9% Black, 35.8% White, 9.3% International, and 4.3% other/unknown. 53% of UIC's students are low income, and 36% are Pell eligible.

Successful candidates must be committed to working with diverse student and community populations. Postdoctoral Research Associates will teach one class each year (these may include both undergraduate and graduate students) and participate in program activities. The program is designed to support scholars' ability to launch a successful program of research (e.g., peer-reviewed scholarly publications). This is a full-time position and includes a competitive salary and benefits package.
