Special Issue of Transportmetrica B: Transport Dynamics on
    “Smart Transportation and Analytics”

Today, a majority of the world’s population is living in urban areas. The rapid growth in urban population and the attendant increase in travel demand have aggravated traffic problems, leading to, for example, heavy traffic congestion, high accident risk, and severe environmental degradation. Many traditional transportation systems in urban areas are inadequate to meet the new challenges arisen due to the fast pace of urbanization. In many cities, demand for transportation infrastructure has grown more quickly than the supply, hence urban mobility requires smarter solutions to optimize transportation systems. Recent advances in technologies and data analytics drive cities to move toward smart transportation. Smart transportation together with data analytics opens up opportunities for optimizing operational efficiency of transportation systems, improving traveler satisfaction, reducing environmental impacts, enhancing safety and system reliability, and making the systems more resilient and sustainable.

The purpose of this Special Issue of Transportmetrica B: Transport Dynamics is to publish high-quality and relevant research in smart transportation and analytics. We invite submissions that introduce new problems and concepts, develop innovative and rigorous methodologies, and provide novel insights in this emerging field of study. Papers may employ a range of research methods including, but not limited to, analytic modelling, theoretical investigation, empirical analysis, simulation, and case studies. Both participants of the HKSTS 2015 Conference and non-participants are welcome to submit papers to this Special Issue.

The scope of this Special Issue includes, but is not limited to, the following:
    •       Smart Transportation System Modelling, Planning, Design, and Control
    •       Smart Transportation Infrastructure
    •       Smart Management of Freight and People Transportation Movements
    •       Intelligent Transportation Systems
    •       Data Integration and Interoperability Issues
    •       GPS in Transportation
    •       RFID Data Analytics in Transportation
    •       Traffic Sensing and Prediction
    •       Telecommunication and Transportation
    •       Traffic Prediction and Analytics
    •       Data-Driven Transportation Decisions
    •       Real-time Transportation Network Optimization
    •       Urban Informatics
