Invitation to apply to the Technology and Operations Management area – PhD in Management, 2019 intake

    November 2019

    Dear Colleagues,

    Greetings from INSEAD.

The INSEAD PhD Programme welcomes the brightest and most creative minds to explore an exciting career in business academia. In the programme, we provide PhD candidates an intensive and rigorous training to become innovative researchers and place them at the best business schools in world. With your help in identifying some of the brightest minds, we hope to continue the visibility of our Programme, continue to highlight the importance of doctoral education and academic research, and produce academics who will lead a life of intellectual leadership and influential scholarship.

On behalf of the Programme, I would like to share with you information about the Technology and Operations Management (TOM) area and the PhD programme in general. If you can share this among your network of students, research assistants, and alumni who have shown interest in research in general and inclination in the said area, I would highly appreciate it.

The INSEAD PhD trains candidates to specialise in one of the eight areas offered: Accounting, Decision Sciences, Entrepreneurship, Finance, Marketing, Organizational Behavior, Strategy, and Technology and Operations Management. In each of these fields, we have an undeniably competitive PhD Programme with our graduates placed in top academic positions globally.

Our students come from a variety of academic backgrounds and nationalities, reflecting INSEAD's unparalleled diversity. Our students do not come only from a business background, but also from engineering, economics, social sciences, etc. Although it takes some creativity and awareness -- or advice from a professor like you - for a young student to understand the potential of management academia, it can also be a great research career. The fields are inherently interdisciplinary and they allow for a range of foundational and applied work. Moreover, in the programme, there is no dominant nationality – our 80 students come from more than 20 nationalities.

Career opportunities with an INSEAD PhD are formidable. Our students receive A+ academic and research job offers upon graduating, in premier academic institutions globally - with recent placements in Stanford, Darden, Maryland, Rotterdam, HEC, Bocconi, Singapore Management University, City University of HK, among others. Our formidable placement history is also reflected in our global research rankings.

Our success is due to several factors: Because we are very selective in our admissions, offering fewer than 5% of applicants each year, and admitting between 16-18 students per year, we have a small and intimate programme, ensuring close mentoring from faculty who are at the forefront of research in their respective fields. Students receive full funding for first 5 years of their PhD, so they can focus on their research. Moreover, it is common for our students to achieve notable successes even while in the programme - publishing in the best journals and presenting their work at prestigious conferences.

INSEAD has full campuses in France (Fontainebleau) and Singapore, and the PhD Programme is highly integrated across the two campuses. Students may start on either campuses, and can spend some time on the other during dissertation phase. Students will also have the opportunity to study at Wharton, made possible by the INSEAD-Wharton Strategic Alliance.

We are now recruiting for the September 2019 intake, with admissions deadline of January 02, 2019. Please feel free to direct to me any inquiries about the area and the programme, as well as to the PhD Admissions Team (Ann Marie Julaton-Scurr at

Thank you in advance for your vital contribution, and we look forward to your future referrals.
