The INFORMS Section on Energy, Natural Resources, and the Environment (ENRE) is launching a new Section Award:

The Harold Hotelling Medal for Lifetime Achievement in Energy, Natural Resources, and the Environment

This is a competitive award that recognizes the lifetime achievements of INFORMS scholars who have made sustained and exceptional contributions to the major areas spanned by ENRE. The name honors the legacy of Harold Hotelling (1895-1973) who made extensive theoretical contributions to the fields of economics and statistics, and applied optimization methods to various practical and important problems in economics, most notably to spatial economics and optimum management of natural resources.

All members of INFORMS who do outstanding work in one or more of the ENRE-related areas are eligible for nomination.

Although ENRE membership is not required, it will be given consideration. Nominations can only be made by current regular members of ENRE. Neither the nominator nor the nominee may be serving on the award committee in the year of the nomination. Contenders who do not receive the award in an award cycle may be nominated again in subsequent years.

    Each nomination dossier must include:

    1) a filled-out one-page nomination form including the names of the nominator and the nominee, and their contact information. The nomination form is available at:

    https://connect.informs.org/energy-natural-resources-and-the-environment/awards/nomination-form-harold-hotelling-medal-award

    2) a brief nomination letter, of no more than two pages, written by the nominator explaining why the nominee is deserving of the award.

    3) exactly three reference letters, at least two of which must be from current regular or retired INFORMS members supporting the nomination. At most one of the references can be from the same institution as the nominee.

    4) a maximum 10-page CV that documents the research record, scholarly output (refereed publications etc.), and other outstanding achievements of the nominee.

The nomination dossier must be submitted to: Alexandra Newman, chair of the selection committee, in electronic form no later than May 15, 2021. Email: anewman@mines.edu
