Advanced Data Analytics for IoT Enabled Smart Systems
    Monday July 22, 12-1 p.m

Presenter: Dr. Shiyu Zhou, Vilas Distinguished Achievement Professor,

Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, University of Wisconsin-Madison

Internet of Things (IoT), as an emerging engineering technology, has the great potential of bringing broad disruptive societal impacts, particularly on economic competitiveness, quality of life, public health, and essential infrastructure. To bring the great promises of IoT into reality, however, many fundamental intellectual challenges need to be addressed and new engineering analytics tools that make IoT systems smart are critically needed. The essential feature of IoT enabled system is that a large amount of data from multiple similar units and from multiple components within the system during their operations are available in real time. With this data, we can compare system operations, share the information, and extract some common knowledge among the population and at the same time enable accurate prediction and control at the individual level. In this talk, I will present several recently developed data analytics including modeling and failure prognosis methodologies that are designed to fully exploit the opportunities brought by IoT enabled systems. The philosophy of transfer learning and Bayesian approach are adopted to allow information sharing and flexible individualized modeling and prediction. Industrial use cases with IoT enabled systems such as the automotive teleservice system and smart appliances system will be presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of these analytics methods.

Dr. Shiyu Zhou is the Vilas Distinguished Achievement Professor in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He received his B.S. and M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Science and Technology of China in 1993 and 1996, respectively, and his master's in Industrial Engineering and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Michigan in 2000. His research interests include industrial analytics and system informatics by integrating statistics, system and control theory, and engineering knowledge for quality and productivity improvement. He has received numerous research grants from various federal agencies and industry companies. He is a recipient of a CAREER Award from the National Science Foundation and the Best Application Paper Award from IIE Transactions. He is a fellow of IISE, ASME, and SME.
