TED University (TEDU, Ankara, Turkey), Faculty of Engineering, Department of Industrial Engineering is accepting applications for a postdoctoral research fellow position in the broad area of stochastic/robust large scale optimization. The postdoctoral fellow will conduct research under the supervision of Professor Vedat Bayram.
Overview
The successful candidate will work in a recently achieved TÜBİTAK (The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey) funded project, 1001 – The Support Programme for Scientific and Technological Research Projects Grant, Earthquake Special Call on "Evacuation Planning and Management for Istanbul City Marmara Sea Shores Against Tsunami Threat", under the supervision of Dr. Vedat Bayram, the principal investigator of the project. The interdisciplinary research aspect and multi-actor approach of the project are strong as it requires collaboration between TED University, Koç University, and Middle East Technical University as well as Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality and other related disaster management agencies and institutions.
In the project, optimization models and methodologies on pedestrian/vehicular/mixed evacuation planning/management for a safe vertical and horizontal evacuation of population under tsunami threat will be developed. Since it is not possible to decisively predict the exact location, time, and impact of the earthquake and whether the tsunami will be a seismic or underwater-landslide-based one, there exist uncertainty in evacuation demand, road network capacity and time-dependent risk levels. Models and solution methodologies proposed will take into consideration this uncertainty and the human behavior. The considered problems are NP-Hard problems due to their combinatorial nature. To solve these problems, two/multi stage stochastic optimization models will be developed and large scale optimization and decomposition methodologies will be employed.
Duration
The total duration of project is 36 months. The position is for one year and can be extended to two or three years based on satisfactory performance. The preferred start date will be right after grant agreement is signed, around beginning of January, 2022.
Essential Qualifications
- PhD. in Operations Research, Industrial Engineering, Civil Engineering or a closely related field by the start date.
- Demonstrated research ability, excellent written and spoken communication skills, and comfort working both collaboratively and independently.
- Expertise in large scale optimization, decomposition methodologies, two/multi-stage stochastic/robust optimization.
- Experience with programming languages (Java+Cplex, Python+Gurobi, R).
Desired Qualifications
- Knowledge and/or experience in disaster management studies/projects
- Knowledge and/or experience in dynamic traffic assignment approaches
- Experience in simulation (using any programming language or software) and use of GIS systems
Application Process
Interested candidates should send their CVs to Dr. Vedat Bayram at vedat.bayram@tedu.edu.tr. Review of applications will begin October 20, 2021 and continue until the position is filled.
