    Federal Policy Update                                                                      

    • National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Director Anthony Fauci predicted that the data from Moderna's experimental COVID-19 vaccine will be available "in the next few days to a week."
    • Tomorrow, the Food & Drug Administration will give a virtual presentation of its research into the effectiveness of facial coverings in preventing the transmission of COVID-19.
    • White House Political Affairs Director Brian Jack tested positive for COVID-19.

     

    Global Response 

    • The Hong Kong and Singapore governments announced that they would officially create an "air travel bubble," which would allow travel to occur between the two areas without any quarantine restrictions – effective on November 22nd.
    • South African President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that they would remove their international travel restrictions, in favor of only requiring all travelers to provide a negative COVID-19 test upon entry into the country.
    • The British government announced that they would create a "travel corridor" within the United Kingdom to allow university students to travel home for the holidays, running from December 3rd through 9th. 
    • Australian Health Minister Greg Hunt stated that they are "ahead of schedule" in their plans to distribute 10 million doses of Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine, with plans to do so by March next year.
    • Amid their recent surge in COVID-19 cases, the Turkish government banned all smoking in public areas.
    • The Russian government announced that preliminary analysis of data from it Sputnik V vaccine suggests that it is 92% effective for treating COVID-19.

     

    State Response 

    • The states of West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Illinois hit their highest number of coronavirus cases reported in a single day so far during the course of the pandemic.
    • New York Governor Andrew Cuomo (D) announced that the state would be imposing the following restrictions: limiting indoor and outdoor gatherings to 10 people, closing bars and restaurants licensed to sell liquor by 10 PM, and requiring gyms to also close by 10 PM. These new restrictions will take effect this Friday. 
    • Vermont Governor Phil Scott (R) announced that the state would begin requiring visitors to quarantine for 2 weeks upon arrival.
    • The state of Texas has officially reached over 1 million coronavirus cases, making it the first state in the United States to do so.

     

    Economic Update 

    • U.S. stocks were volatile today, with the three indices closing with mixed results. The Nasdaq Composite climbed by 2.01% and the S&P 500 by 0.77%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by 0.08%.

    • In the United States: Over 10,677,204 cases and 247,119 deaths in 50 states, 4 territories, and Washington, D.C.
    • Worldwide: Over 512,352,598 cases and 1,287,809 deaths in at least 204 countries and territories.
