U.S. Federal Policy Update
- House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) sent a letter to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) urging that the Senate move quickly to pass another coronavirus economic relief package. In the letter, the two Democratic leaders warned that "the nation has seen a dramatic surge in both cases and deaths caused by the COVID-19 pandemic," and also the "economy is facing one of its greatest challenges since the Great Depression."
- Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell cautioned in his floor remarks this afternoon that Americans "must have no stigma – none – about wearing masks when [they] leave [their] homes and come near other people."
Global Response
- World Health Organization Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced that the organization is planning to send a team to China next week to study the origin of virus, with the hope that this "will lead to understanding of how the virus started and what we can do for the future to prepare."
- The United Nations' World Food Program warned that "the front line in the battle against the coronavirus is shifting from the rich world to the poor world" – suggesting that "until the day we have a medical vaccine, food is the best vaccine against chaos."
- Indian Health Advisor Jayaprakash Muliyil spoke towards the inaccuracy of COVID-19 case tracking in India, stating that "it is very difficult to count all deaths." He explained that this is because "there are no real mechanisms to ascertain causes of deaths in villages," and it is vital to "remember that at least half of all deaths will happen in rural villages - around 66 percent of our population."
- The Australian government announced that the country experienced their largest single-day rise in new COVID-19 cases since mid-April – leading them to consider reimplementing several coronavirus restrictions.
- The South Korean Health Minister stated that the country will begin allowing fans back into sporting events this week.
- South African Health Minister Zwelini Mkhize cautioned that the country is facing "a rapid rise" in cases, ever since they began reopening earlier in June.
- The United Arab Emirates announced that they would be suspending all flights in from Pakistan, starting today – due to an uptick in cases.
State Update
- New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy announced that the state will delay its reopening plans, and not allow indoor dining to resume services this week.
- California Governor Gavin Newsom announced that he has ordered bars to close in several counties due to their recent increase in cases.
- The mayors of Broward and Miami-Dade counties in Florida announced that they would close the county's beaches before the July 4th weekend stating that "the only prudent thing to do to tamp down this recent uptick is to crack down on recreational activities that put [their] overall communities at higher risk."
Economic Update
- U.S. stocks rose today, with all three indices reporting overall losses. The Dow Jones Industrial Average grew by 2.32%, the S&P 500 by 1.47%, and the Nasdaq Composite by 1.20%.
