Emerging Economies Doctoral Student Award, 2019
The Emerging Economies Doctoral Student Award (EEDSA) has been created by the Production and Operations Management Society (POMS) to establish institutional linkages to reach out to future scholars in emerging economies, to encourage their development and to facilitate building connection to POMS. The emerging economies are grouped into the following three regions for this award: Africa, Asia-Pacific, and Latin America & Caribbean.
Award Criteria
To be eligible for the award, the student must be currently enrolled (at the time of the application) in a Ph.D. program in an Operations Management related field in a country with an "emerging economy" from one of the three regions ‐ Africa, Asia‐Pacific, and Latin America & Caribbean. Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, and Taiwan are not considered emerging economies for the purpose of this award. To receive the award, a Ph.D. student must demonstrate evidence of substantial promise as a scholar in an Operations Management related field. In each region, the award will go to the student who demonstrates the greatest promise as judged by the committee members.
The recipient of the award, a Ph.D. student, will receive a grant to cover travel from abroad to attend the POMS 2019 Conference in Washington, DC, USA. The grant can be used for conference registration, airfare, room accommodation at the conference hotel, and up to U.S. $200 to meet incidental expenses. However, the total grant money will not exceed U.S. $2,000. The award committee may give the award to one or more Ph.D. students from each of the three regions. The grant money will be split among the awardees; and the total grant money awarded for each region should not exceed U.S. $2,000. An institution (university or corporation) may sponsor a student with a commitment to partially fund the cost of travel from abroad to the U.S.A.
Procedure for Submissions
By January 15, 2019, please email copies of the materials listed below to the committee chair, Professor Amit Eynan (aeynan@richmond.edu) along with a copy to Professor Sushil Gupta, the Executive Director of POMS via e-mail (poms@fiu.edu). The committee chair will acknowledge receipt and distribute copies to the judges. The portfolio should include:
- Send a 50-word abstract to be included in the conference for presentation. If you have already submitted your abstract, please provide us the abstract number. Also provide the appropriate track of the POMS Houston conference, abstract title, keywords, your name, institution, city, state, country, email you will use for conference correspondence, and gender (if you have not already submitted that).
- An extended abstract (in pdf format) of at most 5 double-spaced pages of the paper to be presented at the POMS conference
- A copy of the candidate's resume
- A letter from an official of her/his academic institution stating that she/he is in good standing in her/his Ph.D. program in an Operations Management related field.
The winner(s) of the award will be notified by February 15, 2019. An award plaque will be presented to the winner(s) at the Awards Luncheon of the 30th Annual POMS Conference in Washington, DC, USA. The winner(s) will be reimbursed up to U.S. $2,000 upon submission of receipts. The amount of $2,000 will cover travel, hotel, and other expenses. Registration for the conference will be complimentary.
