Federal Policy Update
- Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) stated that he supports "a highly targeted" coronavirus relief package, emphasizing that he "doesn't think the current situation demands a multitrillion-dollar package."
- Center for Drug Evaluation Director Janet Woodcock, who also serves as a member of the Operation Warp Speed initiative, stated that she is confident that Eli Lilly's monoclonal antibody treatment could potentially be effective at lower doses. She added that "the lower dose is a rational choice, because [they] don't want to give more of a drug than is needed."
- The Food & Drug Administration issued an emergency use authorization for the monoclonal antibody therapy bamlanivimab to treat mild to moderate COVID-19 in patients over 12 years of age and weighing over 88 pounds.
Global Response
- European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced that the European Union would authorize a contract for up to 300 milllion doses of the vaccine currently under development by Pfizer and BioNTech.
- Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that the government would pledge $61 million to assist their Manitoba First Nations with combating COVID-19, targeting "public health measures, food security, and other surge capacity needs."
- United Kingdom Health Secretary Matt Hancock confirmed that obtaining the vaccine would not be mandated for British citizens. Furthermore, British Government Advisor John Bell stated that the UK has a 70-80% chance of returning to normal operations by next year if residents continue to follow the current protocols to restrict the spread of COVID-19.
- The Estonian government announced that they would be issuing a COVID-19 mask mandate, along with a recommendation that citizens cancel upcoming Christmas parties and that residents work remotely when able.
- Lebanon is implementing a lockdown that will close schools, government agencies, companies, private institutions, and retail stores – effective on Wednesday.
- Welsh Education Minister Kirsty Williams announced that the country's school system would cancel end-of-year school exams for their students, out of "fairness."
State Response
- Utah, Illinois, and Montana broke their records of new COVID-19 cases reported in a single day.
- North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper (D) announced that they would now be restricting the state's indoor gathering limit to 10 people.
- New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy (D) warned that the state is facing a "grave situation, just as it is probably right now in most American states."
- Minnesota Governor Tim Walz (D) stated that their tracking of COVID cases in the state has found that 70% of the outbreaks from June to November have been because of social gatherings.
- New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio (D) announced that the city will dispatch new Mental Health Teams to address the mental health ramifications of the coronavirus crisis.
Economic Update
- U.S. stocks were volatile today, with the three indices closing with mixed results. The Nasdaq Composite fell by 1.37% and the S&P 500 by 0.14%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose by 0.90%.
