We have openings for two postdoc positions at Berkeley Lab to work on data science/data management. Please see the descriptions below and forward to anyone who might be interested.

Position 1: Environmental Data Science Fellow
The Berkeley Lab's Energy Geosciences Division has an exciting opportunity for an Environmental Data Science Postdoctoral Fellow to investigate the impacts of streamflow disturbances, such as floods or droughts, on water quality in different river corridors of the United States.

In this role, you will be responsible for integrating large temporal and spatial datasets, conducting analysis using statistical, wavelet, pattern recognition techniques, and implementing predictive machine-learning models.

    What You Will Do:
    • Develop and implement algorithms and data processing methods for repeatable integration and QA/QC of diverse temporal and spatial datasets of river discharge, water quality, watershed characteristics obtained from several federal sources including the DOE, USGS, NOAA, USDA, EPA.

    • Analyze data and extract patterns using statistical, wavelet, classification, or other data mining methods.

    • Research and develop machine learning approaches for data-driven modeling of water quality.

We are seeking candidates with a strong background in Earth science informatics, computational, or data sciences, with demonstrated experience in data analysis and data-driven modeling.

Position 2: Postdoc for ESS-DIVE Data Repository
Berkeley Lab's Earth and Environmental Sciences Area (EESA) has an opening for a Postdoctoral Fellow to join the Environmental Systems Science Data Infrastructure for a Virtual Ecosystem (ESS-DIVE) project. ESS-DIVE is a DOE data repository that stores diverse datasets from terrestrial and subsurface ecosystem research projects.

The postdoc will join the ESS-DIVE research and development team working on community engagement, data standards and building tools for data use.

    What You Will Do:
    • Research and provide recommendations on community standards for environmental data.
    • Work with the community to adopt existing standards or define new standards as needed.
    • Build file parsers, quality checkers and other tools to enable advanced search, integration and visualization of data submitted in standardized formats.
    • Collaborate extensively with the DOE Environmental Systems Science (ESS) research community.
We are seeking candidates with prior experience in data synthesis or analysis, and strong communication skills.
