INFORMS is saddened to share of the passing of Ted Leslie Gifford, a member of INFORMS, INFORMS Roundtable, and winner of several INFORMS awards. He grew up in Ontario, CA before earning a degree from the University of California, Santa Barbara, followed by an advanced degree from University of California, Berkeley in mathematics. Gifford then traveled to Alaska, where he taught college math and founded a consulting company during the Alaskan pipeline boom. A professor of computer science at University of Alaska, he started on sabbatical so he could work on his master's and doctorate degree in Operations Research at Georgia Tech.

In 2009, Gifford was a member of the team that was awarded the INFORMS Daniel H. Wagner Prize for Excellence in Operations Research practice, and was a finalist again in 2017. He was also presented with the Best Paper Award by the INFORMS Transportation Science and Logistics Section in 2010, and in 2018 placed third in the INFORMS Innovative Applications in Analytics Award.

Prior to his death, Ted was working for Schneider National in Green Bay, WI.
